DIGITAL EVIDENCE THE END OF THE GOLDEN AGE*

by

DR BRADLEY SCHATZ**

The 'golden age' of computer forensics is drawing to an end, as digital evidence diffuses away from single devices under the control of an individual, to diverse devices in disparate locations.

Dr Bradley Schatz discusses the challenges of accessing and using digital evidence in a world where individuals no longer have custody of their digital information.

The last decade has seen a dramatic uptake in digital communications. While more recent communication mediums such as Facebook are only now becoming mainstream, the majority of literate members of our society now possess an email address, and would not be daunted by the prospect of searching for information on the internet. Electronic evidence (or more precisely, Digital Evidence) sourced from these mediums is routinely accepted in legal proceedings with little ado, beyond concerns related to quantity.
